Retro-style RPG Sea of Stars has surpassed 100,000 sales on its first day of availability, demonstrating that retro-style RPGs still have a following among gamers.
The independent game Sabotage Studio’s The Messenger is an impressive number. It becomes even more remarkable when the game is released simultaneously on both Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus – the first video game to do so.
The sales figures, made on Twitter (now called X), specify the copies sold instead of the game’s total player count, indicating that 100k represents the number of Steam and Switch sales.
The game was first announced in 2020 via Kickstarter and has gained a strong following.
It was released on all platforms to generate buzz, which has helped boost initial sales.

Eurogamer’s Sea of Stars review calls the game a “throwback RPG infused with contemporary magic and care.”
“Sea of Stars rips inspiration from all directions – not from the obvious Chrono Trigger – tosses those inspirations into a blender, and the resulting cocktail is smart, charming, and constantly surprising. More importantly, the game never feels derivative, balancing old and new on a knife’s edge.”
As I played the demo myself before release, I jumped in immediately. I’m having the most fun.
